The complete pumping package—not another rebuild page

A diffusion pump does not operate alone. Its performance depends on the chamber connection, inlet conductance, pump fluid, jet stack, heater output, cooling water, baffle or cold trap, high-vacuum valve, foreline pressure, backing pump, gauging and control sequence.

This page organizes that equipment in one place. Use it to understand the pumping stack, identify connected components and manufacturers, review integration considerations, and continue to the dedicated YTI page for refurbishment, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, backing-pump repair, components, rentals or custom fabrication.

How this page differs from Diffusion Pump Refurbishment: this hub explains the equipment and its place in a high-vacuum system. The refurbishment page explains the depot rebuild scope, failure symptoms, teardown process, testing and warranty.

Pumping-Stack Architecture

Six equipment layers behind diffusion-pump performance

Reliable high vacuum depends on the entire path from the chamber to the backing pump. A correctly sized pump can still underperform when one surrounding layer limits flow, heating, cooling, foreline pressure or safe sequencing.

Layer 01

Pump Body & Inlet

Throat, inlet flange, pump body, sealing surfaces, boiler section, structural supports and the conductance path between the chamber and pump.

Layer 02

Fluid, Boiler & Heaters

Application-appropriate pump fluid, charge level, boiler condition, heater type, electrical rating, mounting and heat transfer into the working fluid.

Layer 03

Jet Assembly

Multi-stage jet stack, nozzles, caps, alignment, internal clearances and vapor-jet geometry that create pumping action through the body.

Layer 04

Cooling & Thermal Protection

Cooling-water flow, coils or jackets, supply temperature, return flow, thermal switches and protection against operation without adequate cooling.

Layer 05

Baffles, Traps & High-Vacuum Valves

Cold traps, baffles, isolation valves, gate valves, chevrons and inlet hardware that affect contamination control, conductance and pump isolation.

Layer 06

Foreline, Backing, Gauges & Controls

Foreline plumbing, backing-pump capacity, pressure measurement, cooling and heater interlocks, valve logic, startup, shutdown and fault protection.

Application & Integration

What determines whether a diffusion pump fits the system

Pump selection and integration should be based on the chamber and process, not just a matching flange. These factors shape pumping speed at the chamber, contamination risk, reliability and cycle time.

Answers

Diffusion pump equipment FAQs

What is a diffusion pump?
A diffusion pump is a high-vacuum pump that heats a working fluid and directs vapor through a multi-stage jet assembly. The vapor transfers momentum to gas molecules and moves them toward the foreline, where a mechanical backing pump removes them. The pump has no moving parts in the main high-vacuum path, but it depends on correct heating, cooling, fluid condition, backing pressure and control sequencing.
Is this the diffusion pump refurbishment service page?
No. This is the top-level equipment-category page for diffusion pumps and their connected pumping stack. It explains applications, major components, integration factors, manufacturers, connected equipment and available YTI pathways. The dedicated Diffusion Pump Refurbishment page explains teardown, cleaning, jet-stack service, resealing, fluid replacement, testing and warranty.
Which diffusion pump manufacturers does YTI support?
YTI supports many pumps from Varian, Agilent, CVC, Balzers and Leybold, along with other current and legacy manufacturers. Send the pump make, model, throat size, nameplate and photos so YTI can confirm the appropriate service, parts, rental, refurbishment or replacement path.
What equipment is part of a complete diffusion-pump system?
A complete package can include the pump body, jet assembly, boiler, heaters, pump fluid, cooling circuit, baffle or cold trap, high-vacuum valve, foreline, mechanical backing pump, pressure gauges, sensors, controls, alarms and safety interlocks. Chamber connection and inlet conductance also affect the performance available at the process chamber.
Can YTI help integrate a diffusion pump with a chamber?
Yes. YTI can review the chamber port, flange and adapter requirements, pump support, alignment, inlet conductance, high-vacuum valve, baffle or trap, foreline, backing-pump capacity, cooling, gauges, controls and interlocks as part of a chamber rebuild, retrofit or custom integration project.
Does YTI provide diffusion pump heaters and parts?
Yes. YTI supplies Diff-Therm diffusion pump heaters and can help with related pump hardware, seals, baffles, traps, valves, fittings and replacement components based on the pump model and current availability. Custom heater and fabrication options may be available for older or unusual equipment.
Can YTI provide a rental or refurbished diffusion pump?
YTI can review rental, refurbished, used, replacement and backup-pump options based on current availability, pump size, connection requirements, application and production urgency. A rental or spare can help bridge downtime while the primary pump is being rebuilt.
What information should I send for a diffusion-pump review?
Send the manufacturer, model, throat size, serial number, nameplate photos, chamber application, target pressure, pump fluid, heater information, cooling arrangement, backing-pump make and model, foreline layout, baffles or traps, valves, gauges, controls, current symptoms, service history, equipment photos and whether production is down.
