Diffusion Pump Buying Guide

Do not choose a replacement diffusion pump by throat size alone

Two pumps with similar nominal inlet dimensions may still differ in overall height, flange pattern, foreline position, heater voltage, pumping speed, fluid requirement, cooling needs and integration hardware. The surrounding vacuum system matters just as much as the pump model.

Confirm flange diameter, flange standard, bolt pattern, valve interface and available physical clearance.

Required capacity

Chamber volume, gas load, target pressure and cycle-time requirements influence the correct pumping package.

Several listings on this page are bare diffusion pumps while others are larger pump-stack assemblies. Knowing which one you need can reduce fabrication and integration work during replacement.

Standalone Diffusion Pump

A standalone pump is appropriate when the surrounding high-vacuum valve, baffle, foreline, backing system and controls are already installed and compatible.

Can YTI refurbish my existing diffusion pump instead of replacing it?

Yes. YTI can disassemble and clean the pump, inspect the internal jet assembly, evaluate heaters and boiler condition, replace seals and gaskets, install appropriate pump fluid, helium leak test the assembly and verify performance.

What brands of diffusion pumps does YTI support?

YTI supports a range of current and legacy diffusion-pump equipment including Varian, Agilent, CVC, Balzers and Leybold, along with additional high-vacuum equipment depending on the exact model and requested work.

Should I buy a replacement pump or rebuild my existing one?

The answer depends on contamination, body condition, jet-stack condition, heaters, required downtime, available replacement equipment, process requirements and the cost of integrating another pump. YTI can evaluate both paths.

What is the difference between a diffusion pump and a pump stack?

A standalone diffusion pump is the high-vacuum pump itself. A pump stack can include the diffusion pump plus valves, baffles or cold caps, foreline hardware, backing equipment, controls, supports and other connected components.

Can I replace one diffusion pump with another pump of the same size?

Not automatically. Nominal inlet diameter does not confirm flange compatibility, overall dimensions, heater requirements, foreline position, pumping speed, fluid requirements, cooling or connected hardware. The complete configuration should be reviewed.

What information should I send YTI before buying a pump?

Send the manufacturer, model, serial or nameplate information, photos, inlet and foreline dimensions, heater voltage and wattage if known, backing-pump model, cooling information, process application, target vacuum and required production timeline.

Can YTI help if I do not know what diffusion pump is installed?

Yes. Send clear photos of the pump, nameplate if available, chamber connection, foreline, heaters and surrounding equipment. YTI can use the physical configuration and system information to help identify the equipment and available service or replacement path.

Why does the backing pump matter when replacing a diffusion pump?

A diffusion pump cannot exhaust directly to atmosphere. It depends on a mechanical backing or foreline pump to maintain acceptable outlet pressure. Weak backing performance can make a good diffusion pump appear to be underperforming.
